about
No one has walked the same path this year but this song says what we wish we could.
----------
It’s funny looking back on the process of the song. Our friend commissioned it as a surprise for her and her husband’s ninth anniversary. I (Lindsey) so desperately wanted it to be good for them and was so desperately nervous that it wouldn’t be. All summer, I obsessed over the technicalities of the song by myself while Rach worked herself ragged opening the restaurant. Even up until a week before we recorded, I couldn’t get myself to the chorus. The range was so big and the jazz chords were too hard, I’d always get caught up. My neurotic brain was in overdrive. If only I were a better musician! If only I were BETTER.
Two days before we were set to record, Rach came in after a long shift. I could tell she was tired but she floated into the kitchen where I was poring over the sheet music. She suggested we move the key up and from there she sang it start to finish. She literally had it in one go. Michael came in with the bass and drums and the sum felt bigger than the parts.
It was so hilariously metaphorical. I literally COULDN’T do it alone. I love the recording we made because I play the smallest part in it. (Unless you count anxiety as playing a part!). The quality of our lives is determined by the people we love and how well we love them and this, I’m learning, doesn’t have anything to do with how “good” I am... Thank goodness.
lyrics
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of a storm
There's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
